The H24HFF is a unique type of film festival. It is designed to make filmmaking accessible to anyone with a camera and a computer. In spite of its accessibility, however, the festival is demanding and encourages a high level of creativity and efficiency in production.
The 24-hour festival model requires filmmaking teams to produce short films entirely within a set 24-hour period using three elements randomly selected at a kick-off meeting. These elements are: a line of dialogue, a prop, and a location type. A jury reviews the completed films, and the top films are selected for showing at the festival screening. At the festival screening, a panel of celebrity judges comments on each production - Canadian Idol-style. Awards are then given for the top films.
The H24HFF does not accept government grants of any kind. We believe that the Canadian film industry is capable of sustaining itself through intelligent and efficient business practices. Recently valued at $400 million in Hamilton alone, the film industry is one of the most valuable avenues of economic development in our city. We are eager to demonstrate this belief through the continued success of this festival.
We are currently entering the third year of the festival. After only 2 years, the Hamilton 24-Hour Film Festival is already the largest 24-hour film festival in Canada!
